The deep blue walls are upholstered in a Romo fabric complete with soft batting behind it. The upholstery nails were put in by hand and match the nails on the chairs and bench. Their satin nickel finish picks up on the other finishes in the kitchen.

Same chairs different upholstery (or seat cushions). Another way to mix up a set of matching chairs is to re‐cover the seats in an array of different fabrics. Or for nonupholstered wooden chairs simply add fresh seat cushions in a pleasing range of colors and patterns.

Tile mosaic and hammered pendant light. Craft a worldly look with a mosaic of mismatched tiles like the Cuban tile shown here printed cushions and a hammered silver or copper pendant light. Benches are extra cozy but a tiled accent wall alone could add oomph to any breakfast nook.

Sally's bedroom growing up was a whirlwind of pink wallpaper floral textiles frilly curtains and precious dolls. In typical Draper fashion it was girly but still simple and refined. In typical Draper fashion it was girly but still simple and refined. Now that Sally is getting into her tweens and teens her rebellious side is starting to pop up. Sally may be a a girly girl for at least the beginning of her tween years but as she starts to develop her own style (and delves into the wild style of the early '70s) bold patterns and color may start to make an appearance in her room. Pale pink walls can be replaced with a vibrant (but tasteful) lavender and a bright pink duvet can cover up the old floral bedding. A graphic rug gives this bedoom the final dose of that great mod style.

Bring in natural light. "A frameless shower gives the illusion of openness. The less metal the less you notice that a wall is dividing the space" says Alison Causer of Alison Causer Design. "In this master bath I really wanted the natural light to reach every corner of the room. Since we used dark natural stone on all four walls we really needed to keep the light moving around the room". Maximize the view. "This home has a sophisticated and subdued palette with walnut casework throughout" says Kerry Ellis of Benning Design Associates. "It also has stunning views which is why we decided to keep the master bath and shower so open".

Composting toilets. Composting toilets which use little or no water are ready for the mainstream with smart systems that can look like conventional toilets (save for missing the water tank). Manufacturers like Clivus Multrum and Sun‐Mar offer centralized systems that have remote tanks for the waste. The tanks can be sized so that minimal attention is required.

Watch out for splinters and nails. You'll need to make sure the wood is properly sanded so splinters won't be an issue. When using wood collected from a demolition make sure to carefully remove any old nails. The pieces will need to be planed and cut to the desired shapes and sizes also. Unless you have the right tools and machines this prep work should be done by a professional finish carpenter.

While the soft curves of a round mirror can add a more delicate feminine touch to a space two rectangular mirrors make a masculine statement in this bath. The frame of this mirror complements the vanity below perfectly while the sconces add further interest. An hourglass mirror in the center reflects onto the other surfaces in the room creating a 3‐D look. Get a look similar to two mirrors by framing a window with mirrors. These beautiful antique mirrors reflect the light from outside giving the whole room a golden glow.

Different chairs same upholstery. Unify a group of lovely chairs old or new by having them re‐covered in the same fabric. In the dining room featured here three different pairs of chairs were all covered in similar fabric to create a "set".
