Filament chandelier. Filament bulbs have risen in popularity with good reason – they exude charm and cast a beautifully warm glow. Single filament bulbs are typically available only in 40 to 60 watts but using a chandelier with many exposed filament bulbs is a wonderful way to get all the charm and the light you need.

Geometric play. This small dining nook was designed by Kimball Starr Interior Design in San Francisco. Starr says her clients wanted the area off the kitchen to be used as an activity nook for playing board games with friends; she added a touch of grown‐up glamour with impressive geometric pendants and a custom banquette upholstered in a playful fabric.

Mod seating and fairy‐tale pendant light. Sleek smooth mod plastic chairs create a dynamic counterpoint to an intricate whimsical pendant light here. Sticking with white for the chairs and light fixture keeps this kitchen (with its pink cabinets) from veering into too‐sweet territory.

The familiar furnishings accents and surfaces in this space right down to the flowered wallpaper mark it as traditional. But its classic mien wouldn't be out of place in a preppy home either. Contemporary forms (that stacked sink!) and plenty of open space drive the design here. The space feels of the moment and that's what contemporary style is all about. From the subway tile to the vintage‐style fixtures and pedestal sink this bath would fit right in with a cottage interior. Beadboard wainscoting would be another ideal choice. This transitional bath blends classic lines and profiles with streamlined detailing and pared‐down accents. It wouldn't look amiss in a traditional or contemporary home but it has its own distinctive appeal.

Elegant Moldings. When a client's home has historic character I never want to cover it up. Shades mounted inside the window frame paired with eye‐catching trim allow light control without feeling fussy. If you don't have historic molding a window is a great place to add some. It's a smaller task than lining a whole ceiling and you can do it in just one room.

High‐backed bench on one side folding chairs on the other. The casual vibe of simple café‐style folding chairs is balanced here by a comfortable upholstered settee on the other side and slipcovered chairs at the ends. If you already have a stately traditional piece (like this settee) folding café chairs can make it feel more casual – plus they are easy on the budget.

Shagreen which is made from stingrays is a super‐exotic choice for wall tile. Sourced from Indonesia these tiles are used from the by‐products of rays that have been harvested for food. Many shower enclosures look prefab and clunky but not this one! Besides the modern glass look this system offers bathers full control of their shower's temperature and volume from outside and inside. Perfect for both young and old a glowing LED light indicates water temperature and an alloy valve prevents sudden changes in temperature preventing a shocking surprise (or worse a scald). These gorgeous polished pyrite tiles can be mixed and matched with different sizes and colors. Subway tiles have been popular for a while but how about mirrored subway tiles for a fresh twist? If you want to create a bath fit for a queen be sure to include this unforgettable "Chrysanthemum" pattern complete with inlaid mother of pearl. If you crave sleek style in the bath turn to fashion designer Jason Wu. His new line for Brizo includes this understated glass shelf.

Treat the tub like furniture. "The owner just fell in love with this tub and had to have it" says Colleen Knowles of knowles ps. "It worked perfectly in this older home where we transformed an extra bedroom into a fabulous master bathroom. The vanities and tub look like furniture items set around the room in an interesting way and the layout leaves the large original windows unobstructed". Add curves to a rectangle. "For this bathroom we wanted a way to maintain as much floor space as possible and create an 'unfitted' look at the same time" says Lance Stratton of Stratton Studio. The tub we selected has a small footprint but still looks substantial. Its slipper shape provides some relief to what is an otherwise rectilinear room".

Bring ranch outbuilding style indoors. The corrugated metal here provides an industrial contrast to the large beams while a door on a track brings barn style inside.

Budget box. Make the most of a breakfast nook by installing a complete compartment that keeps diners out of the way of the cooking action in the kitchen. Additionally those on a budget will benefit from copying the style of the boxed‐in nook pictured here. Inexpensive wood can be painted white to make the area bright. To add value choose a more expensive tabletop and treat it with a good sealant oil to keep it looking good with use.
