Massive paper lantern. Suspended over the table like a full moon the paper lantern is on a grand scale making this dining space so impressive. And while an authentic Noguchi paper lantern is stunning there are paper lanterns available at all prices and in all sizes.

Wood is tops but don't discount glass. The advantage of a glass‐top dining table is that it works well with many decor themes. And because it has a reflective surface it is an excellent choice for a space that might need to look a little lighter and brighter. Glass dining tables are tough too. Today's versions are made with tempered safety glass which means the glass resists scratches and heat and won't shatter if knocked. You can also choose glass that is tinted in a range of different colors even black. Another benefit of a glass table is that you can surround it with versatile seating arrangements from mismatched dining chairs to multicolored options.

Be honest about what is used in this room and make space for it. Do you craft while watching TV? Do the kids use the living room as their playroom? Stop the constant struggle to clean up these items and put them where they "belong". Instead work in some permanent living room storage space for toys crafts games and so on. If you need to make room first take out items that are not frequently used in the living room. Books that you want to keep but that no one is likely to read again anytime soon could go on shelves in a bedroom for instance.

Crystal chandelier. It might be all about low‐slung pendants and marquee lights right now but a crystal chandelier is never dated. More than a mere light it adds instant sparkle glamour and just a smidgen of grandeur to any space. Even a budget model – as opposed to an original French rewired antique – gives that extra je ne sais quoi. Don't automatically choose bronze by the way. The jewel‐like version here perks up a plain ceiling and echoes other colors in the room.

Chesterfield sofa. It's an ongoing favorite in fashionable bars and boutique hotels and no wonder. With their clean lines and comfort button‐backed chesterfield sofas are truly timeless and look as good in a modern warehouse apartment as in a grand country abode. The classic version comes in tan leather but for a sumptuous update I love the raspberry‐pink and pewter‐colored velvet numbers here.

Layer your lighting. "In the last five years we've seen a huge change in the way that our clients look at kitchen lighting" notes Heather Moe of Design Moe Kitchen & Bath. "While function is still important we now layer the lighting to give homeowners an extraordinary flexibility of effect. We routinely have seven levels of illumination: countertop and general lighting under‐cabinet task lighting over‐cabinet up lighting accent cabinet lighting some supporting sconce fixtures (mounted on walls or on cabinets) ceiling lighting and – to top it all off – a central accent fixture usually something pretty and eye catching at the room's focal point".

Accent the cabinets. "Our homeowners wanted a hint of sophistication yet wanted to play up the farmhouse look in the kitchen" says Amy Krieger of Oakley Home Builders. "The white cabinetry is accentuated with the use of crystal chandeliers. These glamorous fixtures add elegance while keeping with the theme of the kitchen".

Dusty blue. Like warm gray dusty shades of blue work well with most tones of red brick complementing rather than competing with them. In this kitchen a brick oven is surrounded by dusty blue painted cabinets a warm cherry island counter and chandeliers for a bit of sparkle. Pale dusty‐blue walls look stunning in this bedroom around a brick fireplace. Off‐white trim and distressed white furniture looks richer than pure white.
